SUMMARY:The History of Fences
LOCATION:Northwest Barrie United Church Hall\, 464 Ferndale Drive North\, Barrie
DESCRIPTION:Who: David Hawke, The History of Fences\n\n\nFences are the "unsung hero" o
f our collective history; used to keep things in, keep things out, define p
roperty or direct flow, fences have been a major tool utilized by all socie
ties. This presentation will review the uses and needs of fences, as well a
s their constructions. There is a close relationship between the soil, the
vegetation and the people of an area as to the function and construction of
a fence. Nowadays the shrubs and grasses that grow in long ago fencelines
provide a special place for wildlife. David Hawke is probably well known to
most BFNC members as he has worked in the the nature interpretaion centres
of Tiny Marsh and Wye Marsh, and was the local Breeding Bird Atlas co-ordi
nator for the first edition. Currently, David is the Stewardship Program Ma
nger for the Couchiching Conservancy land trust, looking after 45 propertie
s that encompass 12,500 acres (and have a lot of fences!).
