LOCATION:Northwest Barrie United Church Hall\, 464 Ferndale Drive North\, Barrie

: underline;">Who: David H
awke, The History of Fences

Fences are th
e "unsung hero" of our collective history; used to keep things in, keep thi
ngs out, define property or direct flow, fences have been a major tool util
ized by all societies. This presentation will review the uses and needs of
fences, as well as their constructions. There is a close relationship betwe
en the soil, the vegetation and the people of an area as to the function an
d construction of a fence. Nowadays the shrubs and grasses that grow in lon
g ago fencelines provide a special place for wildlife.

</di
v>
David Hawke is probably well known to most BFNC members as he has wo
rked in the the nature interpretaion centres of Tiny Marsh and Wye Marsh, a
nd was the local Breeding Bird Atlas co-ordinator for the first edition. Cu
rrently, David is the Stewardship Program Manger for the Couchiching Conser
vancy land trust, looking after 45 properties that encompass 12,500 acres (
and have a lot of fences!).
